OYHC professionals are advocates for promoting health and preventing chronic diseases (mental and physical) through education and setting up day clinics within organizations.
One of the many ways OYHC professionals give back to the community is through partnering with compassionate and liked-minded organizations to educate seniors, adolescence and adults on key factors determining health set by the government of Canada. In general, there is a lack of knowledge when it comes to understanding what constitutes good heath and what are the key factors influencing or causing illness/disease.
The way of diminishing and controlling chronic disease(s), lowering mental illness and for maintaing overall wellness is through preventative/promoting education at all stages of development. These actions appear to be simple but it is an important life altering step. Furthermore, when the methodologies are applied correctly it will enhance quality of life. It requires a great deal of self care and work to maintain health. Unfortunately, it is one of the most important factors we push aside. “You are not good for anyone, if you are not good for yourself”. Very little attention is paid upon the former and the importance only comes into consciousness when the disease is apparent and begins to effect quality of life.
“Preventing sickness, as opposed to treating it, is widely seen as the most efficient means of achieving better public health” (Health Canada).
