Advanced Cardiac Life Support(ACLS)

The goal of ACLS, in short, is to attempt to restore life to those whose hearts have stopped. It is a combination of Cardiac drugs knowledge, airway management, oxygen therapy , CPR and Defibrillation to restart the heart.

Upon successful completion of a ACLS course , the participants will be able to: 

  • Perform Adult CPR

  • Recognize and manage hypoxic states

  • Manage the airway using basic and/or advanced equipment and techniques

  • Recognize and respond to cardiac arrest rhythms and the most common brady and tachy arrhythmias

  • Safely operate a conventional monitor defibrillator for defibrillation and synchronous cardioversion

  • Safely operate an automated external defibrillator (AED)

  • Appropriately use transcutaneous pacing devices

  • Administer appropriate pharmacologic agents via intravenous and endotracheal routes

  • Recognize and promptly manage acute coronary syndromes and stroke

  • Understand the limitations and ethics surrounding resuscitation

  • Provide leadership and direction to others involved in resuscitative events

ACLS is taught according to the guidelines of the American Heart Association. No certification will  provided at the moment in ACLS just education . Upon completion CPR type E certification (instructor designed course) will be provided as well as Targeted responder CPR plus AED certification will be provided from the Heart and Stroke foundation.  

This course is only taught by Donald Oxford York. In Winter 2008, certification will be provided after the new ECC guidelines are implemented. 

 
Factoid
 
Approximately 5% of all Quebecers have taken the CPR course. This is a low percentage given that heart disease accounts for a 3rd of all death in Quebec..
