High Blood Pressure (HBP) is a danger to all Canadians. It is also known as the “Silent Killer”. Contrary to popular belief, it is a very harmful condition that is not only generated in old age. Young Children and teenagers are beginning to suffer with this condition. HBP is the number one factor for heart disease and stroke. If left untreated poses a serious threat to your health.

 

Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure or force of the blood against the walls of your blood vessels. If this pressure is too high or low it can have dangerous and long-term effects on your health.

 

High Blood Pressure

In Adults, High blood pressure or hypertension is usually defined as a blood pressure that is consistently greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg systolic pressure, or greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg diastolic pressure.

 

How often should I have my blood pressure checked?

It is recommended that all Canadians over the age of 20 have their blood pressure checked regularly.

 

Low Blood Pressure
Some people naturally have blood pressure that is somewhat lower than the average of 120/80. Low Blood Pressure is not a problem unless it causes symptoms such as dizziness or fainting.
